The month of October means that we are “officially” in fall. Looking out of my window, I can already see the change in season taking effect. Despairing at the thought of raking the already accumulating pile of leaves from my lawn; the fresh greenery of summer is swept away in a wash of amber, gold, brown and red. In celebration of autumn, a wonderful collection of Dutch artists share their “Sweet Autumn” collaboration. This festive collection of cakes is sure to inspire. We talk with collaboration organizers Jacqueline Van der Wal and Petra Arnold about this ‘seasonal sensation’.
Jacqueline and Petra (Peet) envisioned a beautiful, fall inspired collaboration featuring Dutch artists of all abilities. Petra explains, “This is a Dutch cake collab, with artists at every level, from beginner to professional. Together we have tried to express, in sugar, how we see the fall. It is such a beautiful season, especially in terms of color. We just love the fall and this is why we chose it.”
Jacqueline and Petra sent out an announcement via their Facebook page to recruit their team of artists. She says, “We had to stop adding people once we hit 50 artists because editing all the pieces requires so much work and time. ” Their biggest challenge was “All of it”, they had never undertaken such a monumental task of organizing so many artists before. “We really just hoped for the best,” jokes Jacqueline. “Much of the work was very fun, with the team being incredibly excited to be part of the project.”
Jacqueline’s cake was inspired by the movie, ‘The Odd Life of Timothy Green.’ Jacqueline notes, “I just really love the concept of the movie, the falling leaves and the colors of autumn. The story is touching; about a couple who unfortunately can’t have children.” The movie is a reflection of the story and the theme, Jacqueline hopes that those who enjoy her cake will be inspired to see the film.
Petra’s creation was inspired by flora and fauna, she loves animals, particularly deer. “I just love animals, pumpkins, the colors of fall are so beautiful.”
Jacqueline and Petra are already planning their next collaborations, those who are interested in joining can sign up via their Facebook page. She hopes other artists will be inspired to join.
