SoFlo Cake & Candy Expo 2022
SoFlo Cake & Candy Expo made its triumphant return in 2022, from April 29 to May 1. It was American Cake Decorating’s first major cake show back since the Covid-19 pandemic, and we couldn’t wait to attend. We went with a tiki theme, complete with grass skirts for the tables, a beachy backdrop, and of course, incredible tiki-themed edible art from our team of collaborators.
Katy Moser-Brandel made an almost-life-sized sculpted flamingo, which she affectionately named Flamingheaux, an ode to her current French-inspired residence of New Orleans. She even made her own modeling chocolate for the project.
Not to be out-flown, Maythé Del Angel’s creation was a sculpted parrot, straight out of a pirate movie. Adorning both sides of the table were golden pineapple vases with wafer paper orchids by Jó Wieneke and sculpted tiki masks by Laura Reyes.
By our selfie booth, which included a very popular giant flamingo pool floatie, were a tiki-themed fondant wedding cake by Ana Patricia Peck and an adorable flip-flop cake with isomalt tropical flowers from Tammy Varela.
And thanks to a generous donation from Icing Images, Anna Astashkina created wafer paper tropical flower garlands and Jennifer Frey threaded wafer paper leis.
We also had an incredible team of artists doing demonstrations at our booth all weekend long. Frequent contributor Ashley Barbey, columnist Emily Lopez, and ACD’s own brand manager and contributor Kala Boulard joined artists Jennifer Frey, Anna Astashkina, Tammy Varela, and Lara Reyes in showing off their incredible skills to the passing public. Fondant, gum paste, isomalt, wafer paper, and even edible oil paints were on full display.
The final highlight of our booth was our incredible swag bag loot given to subscribing customers, which wouldn’t have been possible without our brand partners: Ann Clark, LorAnn Oils, and Roxy & Rich.
Our team would like to extend a special thanks to Jennifer Frey, who not only made the wafer paper leis, but also spearheaded and coordinated the installation team.
