American Cake Decorating Magazine Calls in Sweet ‘All-Star’ Judging Panel to Determine ‘Out of the Box Cake Challenge’ Winner

ST. PAUL, MN – In the exciting “Out of the Box Cake Challenge,” ten incredibly talented cake finalists are currently vying for a cash prize, an incredible package of products from sponsors, bragging rights, and the much-coveted “front cover” of American Cake Decorating magazine, North America’s bestselling cake magazine. 

The ten cake artists went head to head online in an anonymous public vote, but due to technical discrepancies in the voting results, ACD magazine has called in an expert panel of judges—Nicholas Lodge, Chrissie Boon, Kathleen Lange, Ted Scutti, and Adam Starkey—to determine the winner. The panel will judge all ten finalist’s cakes anonymously with the top-scoring cake determining the winning cake finalist, who will be named the “Out of the Box Cake Challenge” winner. The expert panel of judges has been charged with marking the ten unique wedding-cake designs on the following merits: overall eye appeal, use of sponsor’s products, interpretation of the brief, use of mediums, and skill and precision. It is not an easy task, but this panel of professional cake judges have the experience, the skills, and the eye for a winner! 

The generous “Out of the Box Challenge” sponsors are Renshaw Americas, Roxy & Rich, Katy Sue Designs, Icing Images, ATECO, and Opulent Treasures, and they wait in anticipation for the judging panel’s decision to be announced and the new winner to be named. 

 The “Out of the Cake Box Challenge” was launched in March 2019 with an open call for submissions with cake decorators pitching their talent to the panel and ACD team (ten images of their best wedding designs were needed, along with a short bio and why they felt they should be chosen to participate). The ten successful cake finalists were then given their “dream wedding client design brief” and a box of brilliant products from sponsors. 

Every mystery box contained products from each sponsor, with each featuring a unique description of the couple the finalists needed to design a cake for, along with a chosen color scheme, theme, and season. Each artist had to think outside of the box and create a one-of-a-kind wedding cake using every product in the box. 

To sweeten the deal, ACD magazine and their sponsors have created generous second-place and third-place prize packages, as well as the promise to feature all ten final cake designs in the American Cake Decorating magazine July/August 2019 issue for all to celebrate and enjoy the hard work of the ten cake finalists.
