So You’re Thinking About A Cake Class?

Ever wondered what happens in a Cake Class? What can you expect? How much experience do you need? Come behind the scenes at the latest class of our resident buttercream expert, Kerrie Wyer, and get an inside look at her exclusive Buttercream Flower Class, the fun, the achievement, and of course, the shenanigans! Read on!..

This is a picture of my gorgeous class from this weekend past.  Hands down this was my favorite class so far. They had never piped flowers before, most had never used buttercream, and we even had an 11 year old in the ranks! They knocked it out of the park, and so can you!

So whether it’s a half day class at a cake show, or a four day adventure, what do YOU need to take part?

No Experience Necessary

What you will need though, is lots of enthusiasm, and a positive attitude. I can guarantee you that your ability to learn a new skill increases dramatically if you back yourself.

Be Positive

In my experience, nothing is impossible to teach, but you have to go into the class with faith in yourself, and your teacher, and not put yourself down if you don’t pick up the skills in the first hour. If you could roll outta bed knowing how to do it, then why go to a class!

Its worth mentioning too, that putting yourself down, brings the class down also.  If you are down on your own work, imagine how the person next to you (who thinks yours looks much better than theirs) is feeling.  Less than. WAY less. So lock away those ‘Negative Nancy’ thoughts, and just have fun.

Have Fun!

Its not the Hunger Games people! You are there to learn a new skill, but you are there to have fun too, which can also come in the form of meeting new friends, spending time with a Cake Idol, or even eating waaay to much buttercream (*cough* GUILTY!).

While no one wants someones shenanigans to disrupt the class too much, life is about laughing, so lighten up and enjoy yourself.

Is it worth the cost?

YES. A Cake Class is an opportunity to get one on one instruction from an expert in the field. You will also come away with either a cake you can eat, or artwork to keep (depending on whether your class is using cake or styrofoam).

Cake classes can be expensive, that’s true, but when you weigh up how much money you might spend on other things like shoes, kitchen appliances (*cough* also guilty!) or other expensive hobbies; learning how to create with cake will pay off at every birthday or wedding you ever have, that’s assuming you don’t run a cake business, in which case you are investing in your business. Plus its fun, lets not forget that!

You also get the opportunity to take away a lifetime of cake experience, a good teacher will share information you never expected like business advice, cake advice, recipes, funny stories- there’s just a wealth of knowledge to be gained from taking a live class that you cannot get from an online platform.

So what are you waiting for?

There is almost certainly a cake teacher near you, whether they teach privately or in store, maybe you even have courses at your local community college, you’ll never know if you don’t look.

Cake Decorating is more than making something you eat look pretty, its self expression, confidence, friendship, you time, and so much more.  Take the leap, you’ll never regret it.
