Intricate Fondant Engraving

Amati Mirji, of Sweet Symphony Desserts, shared with us this incredible, intricate cake which features highly detailed fondant engraving.

Her work was recently featured in the inaugural issue of Sugar, India’s first cake art magazine.

Amati Mirji2_HPS_5554Amati shared a bit about the meaning behind her cake: “Ganesha, also known as the Elephant God, is one of many Gods worshipped in India. The elephant head is said to symbolize the ability to learn wisdom and acquire knowledge.

Ganesha is worshipped as the remover of obstacles and the patron saint of the Arts and Sciences. He is routinely worshipped at the beginning of all major festivities and rites, and most individual spiritual worship begins with a prayer to Ganesha.

Ganesha is usually seen with a mouse at his feet or as his vehicle. Mythology says that the mouse represents base desires that are to be overcome and hence is at Ganesha’s feet.

I have made the Ganesha figurine out of fondant and gumpaste. It was very difficult to find molds that would do justice to the intricate designs usually found in Indian jewellery, therefore I used small parts of larger molds and put them together to make the intricate designs blend harmoniously.”

“Since Ganesha is a deity and holds a lot of emotional value in the Hindu culture, I did not want that the figurine should be cut and consumed. Hence, the figurine is placed in such a way that it could be separated from the cake that is the seat and base. Of the many deities that form the Indian Hindu culture, Ganesha is my favourite and we have many forms that adorn our home.”
