The Drive to Compete by Pamela Heun

The Oklahoma Sugar Art Show (OSSAS) is undoubtedly one of the most hotly anticipated and highly regarded shows in the United States; this sugar-art extravaganza drives cake designers from all over the country to spend hours, sometimes many hundreds of hours painstakingly crafting magnificent works of cake-art in the hopes of clinching the coveted grand prize. Entering for the 2nd time in the Grand National Wedding Cake Competition, Pamela Heun put her skills to the ultimate test, crafting a towering Parisian-inspired floral creation that stretched and challenged her to her creative capacity. She shares a behind-the-scenes look as she prepared her competition cake, and the surprising lessons she learned through the experience.

Highlights from OSSAS – ACD+

Here at ACD we are still buzzing with excitement over our recent trip to the Oklahoma Sugar Art Show. Undoubtedly one of the most hotly anticipated, and highly regarded shows of the year; OSSAS did not disappoint. Budding and eager bakers were thrilled with a collection of Grand National Wedding Cakes exploring the latest trend for metallics. Towering creations and show-stopping designs wowed guests with the latest cake decorating innovations. There was plenty to see in other divisions with towering cookies, mind-boggling optical illusions and sculptural wonders.

Highlights from the Oklahoma Sugar Art Show

This weekend American Cake Decorating magazine attended the much anticipated Oklahoma State Sugar Art Show, and this spectacular cake event did not disappoint. Forty-eight hours, and 2700 photographs later- we STILL hadn’t captured all there was to see. Each time we circled the floor, there was a hidden detail waiting to be discovered. The cakes reflected the incredible diversity of talent in our sugar art community. Mad about Metallics was the theme of this year’s show and gold seemed to be the metallic of choice for a lot of the artists. We share some highlights from the Grand National Wedding Cake Competition.
