Showcase Inspiration: Karen Geraghty

Karen Geraghty of Bake Cake Create, whose creation was featured in the March/April 2016 issue Showcase, shared a bit about her creative process.

“I love to make sugar shoes that look so real, you feel you could put your foot straight into them,” says Geraghty. “I was thrilled to be invited to the Avant-Garde collaboration organized by the amazingly talented Rebekah of Rebekah Naomi Cake Design. What a challenge, but a most welcome one, to make something incredibly unique and experimental.   The first thing I thought about was all those weird and wacky Avant-Garde shoes available out there.

Lots of research done, which brought up images of the most fabulous shoes, some of which you would wonder if you could ever wear and truly feel comfortable walking in. But we women put aside comfort for fashion always! I was really taken with the fabulous cage shoe by Dolce & Gabbana and decided to use it as my inspiration. My first thought was, it had to have a little exotic bird encased inside, which, if it were a real shoe, would swing on its little perch as the owner walked. It was a very technically challenging shoe but I loved every part of making it. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.”

More About Karen
My name is Karen Geraghty and I live in Dublin, Ireland. I have always loved baking cakes, starting from a very eKaren_Geraghty_headshot_HPS_5415arly age with my fabulous Mum in the kitchen at our family home. While I have always been creative in other artistic areas, I only got involved in the creative side of decorating cakes when I hit the ripe old age of 40. I had given up my very busy job in the pharmaceutical industry when my first son was born, to be a full time mum at home and when my second son started school, I thought it was time to do something for myself that I could manage while the boys were at school but still have time for them when school was finished. After making cakes for several friends and family and receiving lots of encouragement, I started my venture with my company Bake Cake Create. I still manage (most of the time, though some late late nights involved!) to balance cake life with family life, so feel I have the best of both worlds, time for creative outlet and time for my boys and husband. I love to make extraordinary cakes to make the recipient feel unique and I specialise in sugar models, sugar shoes and painting on cakes.
