The first three cakes were all done for Revolution Wedding Tour (revolutionweddingtours.com) at Atlanta in March of this year.  The venue, Terminus 330,  I was selected for specifically had the whole geode/ rock/ crystals/ organic theme and was titled “Love Rocks”.  We get creative freedom for designs as long as it fits within the theme so I tried to make 3 completely different cakes to fit different personalities.
This is one of my favorites!  The geode was 16 inches tall and about 6 inches at the widest point. It was made by pouring isomalt onto parchment paper into a long organic shape, then adding the sugar while hot.  I let it cool for a day and harden then hand painted the purple shades with mixes of luster dusts and gel colors to get the amethyst effect.  I actually had the geode made before deciding on the cake design.  Ha   I chose to marble the fondant with a bit of purple tone instead of the expected grey to blend with the geode better.  I added light touches of gold leaf and gold sugar crystals all around.

Making chandelier cakes is one of my favorite things because of the obvious hanging upside down WOW factor, but also because it presents challenges and makes me push and go out of my comfort zone. When I started thinking of natural elements and rocks for this event, lava rocks some how popped in my head!  It was something different I hadn’t seen done on a cake yet.  I wanted to keep a little gold in all three cakes to tie in with the decor and chose to go more subtle with pink tones instead of bright lava red.  That seemed more realistic for a wedding cake and helped keep it soft and romantic especially once the florals were added.
When I do cover my cakes with fondant, I use about a 50/50 mix of homemade modeling chocolate and marshmallow fondant.
I tinted the mix a few different soft shades of pink tones and marbled with white to cover the cakes.  The little gold crystals are sugar rock candy. I typically buy it in white and then am able to tint or paint the sugar to coordinate.  I hand painted the gold with Rolkem luster dust mixed with a bit of Everclear.
The “lava” is poured isomalt.  I used shades of red and pink gel colors and swirled them in the isomalt with skewers while still hot. Then I poured the isomalt on a silicon mat in kind of random size and shape puddles.  I just let it do what it wanted!  I used another skewer dipped in the gold and drug it through it each lava rock quickly while it was all still hot.
I painted piping gel onto the fondant knowing how I generally wanted the lava to flow.  Instead of waiting for the isomalt to be completely dry and hard, I began placing the pieces while they were still ever so slightly pliable.  This let the pieces flow and stretch just a bit more to have that oozing lava look.
Finally I added the rock candy in any gaps, cracks, and along the edge of all the lava.
I made the internal structure that supports the cake and used a hanging plant stand from Amazon to hang and display the cake.
The flowers were provided by Robin of Rhapsody in Blooms, Atlanta GA. Photos are by Raven of Youareraven.com.

The original inspiration for this cake came from a set of hexagon party plates I had seen online and saved for nearly a year!  (I attached a photo of those as well) I often look to anything other than cake for design ideas.
The marble, blush, and gold tones were perfect for this event.  I knew I wanted to incorporate the hexagons on the cake, plus a hexagon tier. I’ve done the gold crystal effect several times now as an alternative to the popular gold sequins and love the texture!
The hexagons and cake were covered in a 50/50 mix of modeling chocolate and fondant.  The gold sugar crystals were attached to the cake with piping gel and then painted with Rolkem gold lust dust.
