Edible Moss Tutorial

With brides looking for rustic textures and a back-to-nature appeal, we’ve put together a fantastic tutorial for edible moss. This delicious, crumbly, creation can be used on cakes, cupcakes, and more to add a touch of the outdoors to your designs.

Components:

  • Zip Lock food storage bag
  • Graham Crackers or similar
  • Desiccated Coconut
  • Green food dye (or blue and yellow mixed together)
  • Vodka or high proof alcohol
  • Rolling pin (blender optional)
  • Baking sheet

Crumble the Graham crackers by either blending for 30-40 seconds in a blender or by placing into a food storage bag and crushing with a large rolling pin.

Editor notes: I prefer doing it by hand as you get uneven pieces which looks more natural.

Add a 1/2 cup of the coconut and mix to combine.

In a small bowl, mix together green food color and vodka and then pour over crumbs and mix thoroughly to combine.

Place the mixture onto a large cookie sheet and bake in a 325-degree pre-heated oven for 10-15 minutes. Allow to cool and then replace into bag and “smash” with the pin again until crumbly.

Attach to fondant cake using edible glue or corn syrup. The moss should attach easily to buttercream.
