Comfort Zones are meant to be tested

I had the very VERY great pleasure to take a modeling class last week, with none other than the incredible Zoe Hopkinson from Zoe Fancy Cakes.  Not only was it an honor to be taught by Zoe, but it was awesomely scary to test my skills, and step outside my comfort zone. Here’s why I think that is so important.

Comfort Zones are just that, comfortable.  Its safe, familiar, and low risk.  Not much Art or innovation has come from being comfortable though. Bummer.

So I swallowed my nerves, steadied my hands, and headed into a modeling class.  Here’s how it went.

The Shape of Things to Come

As you may have guessed, we weren’t using Buttercream.  A bit unusual for me I’ll grant you. The theme was also Steampunk, which I hadn’t really done before, even though my husband is a big fan of Steampunk, so there’s another new curveball coming my way.

But you know what? I found so much JOY in learning something new and just having fun.

I’m pretty busy, as we all are, so I don’t really have the ‘time’ to just play with new mediums and techniques, just for the fun of it, but that is something else I got from Zoe’s class, just how much I’m missing out on if I don’t make time. I’ve also developed a “minor” obsession with Steampunk, (come by my Facebook page to see the Steampunk Cookies I made this week!)

It Turns Out I’m Kinda Awesome

viktoriaSo I’m pretty good at modeling apparently. I’m mean Zoe is an incredible teacher and makes everything easy to understand and replicate, but I’m totally taking credit 😉

In all seriousness, I learned how to model, in one class. That’s pretty cool. In no small part because I LET myself have fun.

I can’t tell you how many times I have heard people say they “couldn’t possibly do that”, and with that attitude, you never will.  You won’t actually get struck by lightning if you take a little longer to pick up a new skill, but you’ll have way more fun if you chill. Trust me.

Let the Obsession Begin!

I’ve found another medium to get obsessed with! Woohoo! Don’t worry, Buttercream is still my first love, but I’m going to MAKE time to make models.  Because it’s fun, and we could all use a little more fun.

Now I can’t take a new class every week, but the point is I’m taking off the blinders, and doing things because they are fun, not just because they are “for work”.How about you?

Read that book you’ve had on the shelf for a year, learn how to tap dance, learn a second language, finally put together that family photo album you’ve been talking about forever, and if possible, take a class with Zoe Hopkinson. Just because it’s fun.
